FIGURE 3.24Map of the Levant with sites mentioned in the study, indicating when major architectural changes occurred.
Thus, it seems that the destruction of some of these sites has nothing to do with internal developments within the cities. In three instances (YoqneÊ¿am, Tell Arqa and Tell Sakka), the destruction level was followed by major architectural changes. In two other sites (Beth-Shean and Tell el-Ghassil), it was not. However, at Tel Qashish, Tel Hazor, and Qatna, no destruction levels were identified. Therefore, it is clear that we cannot automatically attribute destruction levels to major architectural changes or assume that major architectural changes should necessarily occur following the destruction of a site. Although each site has its unique historical record, examining the regional developments can illuminate some geopolitical trends. The overall trend in the geographic framework of this study points to major changes between the LBI and the LBII. Though there are some sites when major changes occur between the MBII and the LBI, these do not constitute the majority of the sites. In addition, these are sites where the differentiation of the strata is not detailed (as in Kamie el-Loz and Tel Sakka) or the excavated area is very small (as in Qashish). Therefore, it seems safe to point to a generalized trend of architectural changes between the LBI and the LBII. I will suggest in the following chapters (especially chapter 5) that this change can be traced back in the geopolitical record of the region and is due to the new administrative system established in the southern Levant following Thutmose IIIâs military campaign and the incorporation of this area into the Egyptian Empire.
The following chapter contains an analysis of the ceramic evidence uncovered in these sites, which strengthen the conclusions of this chapter. The ceramic analysis will also contribute to identifying the time of change.
